When I first got wind of a team of former developers from big names like Call of Duty, Halo, Destiny, and Apex Legends joining forces to create a new game, my mind immediately pictured a fast-paced, ability-heavy shooter set on an alien planet in the distant future. What I wasn’t prepared for was their brainchild, Covenant, which feels very much like Dark Souls transformed into a first-person shooter. That may sound like an oversimplification, but it captures the essence. And after catching the latest glimpse at the Galaxies Showcase, let me tell you—Covenant looks incredibly promising.
Doom The Dark Ages is just around the corner, throwing dark fantasy enthusiasts exactly what they’ve been craving. If my preview impressions hold up, it’s set to be a standout. Plus, we’re seeing the revival of the cherished Painkiller, set to deliver a similar vibe later this year. Blogged alongside these titans is Covenant, which brings us intense, raw battles set against a gothic, atmospheric backdrop.
The Legion Studio team, packed with FPS veterans, ensures Covenant’s arsenal is nothing short of impressive with its array of massive machine guns, bows, and crossbows. What keeps the soulslike spirit alive (even in a first-person view) are the numerous melee options highlighted in the new trailer. We witness a proper duel with longswords, a giant stag’s antler cleverly turned into a club-and-bow hybrid, allowing you to send foes airborne and target them in one fluid motion. All Thor enthusiasts can rejoice too, as there’s a hammer to hurl, smashing into enemies and delivering an electrifying shockwave. Any Doom fanatics will be delighted to spot a version of the iconic chainsaw weapon as well.
The game doesn’t stop there—it offers interactive environmental combat. One memorable clip shows a pot being flung into the air, only to be kicked karate-style towards an enemy. A sweeping leg maneuver sends foes sprawling to the ground. For a game drawing inspiration from soulslikes, the movement and dodging are remarkably agile and dynamic.
All this boils down to a wealth of combat strategies in Covenant. The fresh footage left me as impressed as I was when it debuted—it nails the aesthetic with its foreboding weaponry, enemy designs, formidable bosses, and haunting landscapes, reminiscent of the Souls series or Lords of the Fallen.
Regrettably, what we’re still missing is any news on a playable demo or release date. For now, Covenant sits in the “check out this awesome trailer and add me to your wishlist” phase. With Doom The Dark Ages and Painkiller slated to arrive over the coming months, I can afford to be patient.
