Intel is finally addressing the performance issues affecting the Arc GPUs when used with older CPUs. They’re now investigating the problem more seriously in hopes of finding a solution.
Intel Tackles Arc GPU Performance Glitches with Older Ryzen and Intel Core Processors
When Intel rolled out the Arc B580 and B570 GPUs, they seemed promising. They offered more VRAM than competing products, yet failed to make a splash in performance charts. A significant factor contributing to their lukewarm reception was poor optimization.
It’s not just about the GPU drivers. The Arc Battlemage GPUs consistently lagged behind competitors due to issues when paired with older processors, like the Ryzen 2000 series and Intel’s 9th-gen Core processors. Hardware Unboxed was quick to highlight this performance gap early on.
Though the issue lingered without much acknowledgment, Intel has recently addressed it in forums. Here’s the official statement they released:
We’re grateful for your patience. We’ve noted reports of performance issues with certain games when paired with older generation processors. To address these, we’re expanding our platform validation to include a wider range of configurations and will continue to refine optimizations.
From this, it’s clear Intel recognized the problem but hadn’t prioritized fixing it until now. They’re planning to extend optimizations across more configurations, suggesting a resolution might be on the horizon. Unfortunately, Intel hasn’t provided a timeline for when these updates might arrive.
To solve the issue, Intel will need to roll out driver updates since the hardware itself matches last-gen competitors in the latest games. Surprisingly, the Arc B580 and B570 perform well with new Intel and AMD CPUs, yet falter with Intel’s own older models.
We hope that upcoming patches will allow Intel to compete more effectively with AMD and NVIDIA. However, even with improvements, Intel might struggle to make significant inroads in the GPU market. The availability of Arc Battlemage GPUs is limited, hampering their presence in the budget segment and stalling any meaningful market competition.
