Incorporating a card system into an FPS game might raise eyebrows, but it was inspired by the evolving rules in sports, as mentioned by Chang Xin, FragPunk’s producer. As a passionate sports fan, Xin sees how changes in sports rules, like those in Europe’s King’s League, add unpredictability and thrill to the game. By introducing unexpected elements into soccer, they managed to keep fans on the edge of their seats—an idea Chang Xin believes is applicable to competitive FPS games as well. Traditional FPS games often lack that element of surprise, leading to predictable outcomes dominated by the most skilled players. With Shard Cards, FragPunk aims to shake things up, adding unexpected twists to the gameplay that deepen tactical choices for all players.
## Crafting the Cards
Creating Shard Cards posed its own set of challenges, especially in balancing the gameplay while introducing new card designs. Initially, FragPunk’s prototype allowed players to alter game rules significantly, but this approach hindered creativity in card development. Recognizing that Shard Cards are meant to disrupt, the team decided to think outside the box. For example, the “Dimensional Travel” card initially allowed players to switch between two worlds, but designing two separate worlds was challenging. Instead, activating the card makes players invisible and immune to enemies, simulating the effect of existing in a separate dimension without changing the map.

Some have worried that these cards might affect the game’s fairness. However, the primary objective is to enhance enjoyment and gameplay: cards bring unpredictability to matches without detracting from core shooting skills. Feedback from newer players is positive—these cards inject variety and surprise, making every match unique. They can combine different Shard Cards for unexpected strategies, like the “Blade Master + Turtleback” combo, which blocks bullets from all directions. In ranked matches, a ban-pick system allows for strategic maneuvering, maintaining competitiveness.
