In ’93, EA and FIFA decided, hey, let’s make a soccer game for the Sega Genesis. They cranked out FIFA International Soccer. Guess what? It blew up! Over 500k copies sold in just four weeks. Crazy, right? EA figured it’d be big because of the FIFA name, but this was beyond their wild dreams.
So, this game kicks off what we now call the FIFA video game franchise, and man, did it explode! Became like, the biggest thing ever for EA. By 2021, they sold a whopping 325 million copies globally. Insane numbers. But, plot twist—EA and FIFA break up in 2022. Whaaaat? EA announced they’re ditching the FIFA license. They’re still doing soccer games, just under a fresh name. So, RIP to the FIFA game series as we know it. Although, who knows? Maybe FIFA pops up in other games, like with Sloclap’s Rematch. Anything’s possible with these folks.
Speaking of Rematch—let’s chat about that. So, it’s not like back in the Sega days when soccer games were everywhere. Now? Not so much. You’ve got a few, like Konami’s PES series. But, their new one, eFootball? Eh, fans aren’t really hyped. Enter Rematch. It’s another non-EA soccer game that’s blowing up lately, which is kinda wild if you think about it.
Rematch comes from this French dev, Sloclap. They made Absolver and Sifu, these martial arts games. But now? A 5v5 soccer game—totally different vibe. It’s got this funky, colorful look, third-person view, the whole shebang. It just dropped a few weeks back, but bam! Already sold over a million copies. By June 25, 2025, it had 3 million players. Let that sink in for a sec.
On Xbox Game Pass too, so not everyone outright bought it, but hey, who’s counting, right?
Now, imagine this—FIFA teaming up with Rematch. Just makes sense. Not saying they’ll rename it to a FIFA game, but maybe slap some FIFA-branded gear in there. They’ve already done collab stuff, like with Puma and a skin of Marc-André ter Stegen. Why not FIFA too?
People might roll their eyes at dropping cash on FIFA-branded stuff, but trust me, it’d sell like hotcakes. EA’s FIFA was huge partly because of that branding. FIFA, soccer—they’re basically BFFs. Especially in Europe. So, if Rematch can snag some FIFA collab, who knows? It could blow up even more. Real FIFA games aren’t showing up any time soon, but Rematch doing this? Could be the next best thing. Fingers crossed, right?
