Man, where do I even start with this whole Microsoft Project Kennan thing? So, apparently, everyone’s been buzzing about Asus whipping up not one, but two new ROG Ally 2 variants. Heard about this from 91mobiles and some guy, Huang something, on X. Anyway, what they’re saying is there’s this black model with an Xbox Button (because why not?) and a more chill white one that’s like, kinda mainstream. Like, sure, let’s have choices, right?
Oh, and Project Kennan — sounds fancy, huh? It’s been floating around in tech gossip circles for a while. Nobody knew squat about it, but now we’ve got clues from those model IDs showing up in the US FCC folder jump thing. It’s wild. The models are kinda like the OG ROG Ally, right? You get either the not-so-muscular AMD Z1 or the beefed-up Z1 Extreme. There’s only like a $100 difference between the two, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.
That Xbox Button, though — why? It screams “Project Kennan” in a way that’s… well, loud. But here’s the kicker: it’ll probably still run Windows 11. Not that I mind, but you’d think they’d tweak it for handhelds, make it a little special. I bet that button just fires up the Game Bar like we’re stuck in PC land. But who knows, maybe they’ll surprise us with some cool tricks. I’m here for it.
The techy stuff kinda makes my head spin — AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip with its 8 cores (which is a jumble of Zen 5 and Zen 5c, apparently) is under there, screaming raw power. Plus a Radeon iGPU that’s catchy. This thing’s armed to the teeth with 16 Compute Units! We’re talking a 2TB SSD and fast charging — like, speedy. The screen? Smooth as butter with that 120 Hz LCD. Oh, and a 7-inch touch thingy. Yum.
Then there’s that white model, rocking an APU known as Aerith Plus. Name sounds ripped from a game or something. Specs seem nice — 16GB of RAM and that same snazzy display. Charger’s a bit slower, but hey, win some, lose some. The APU’s got this cryptic OPN code (“100-000001835”. No clue here, by the way). Its guts seem fresh out of AMD’s labs – might be new-ish, or a remix of the Steam Deck’s brains.
The whisper is that this Ryzen Z2 A model rocks 4 cores and a 6W-20W TDP. Kind of a blank spot on the architecture, but more surprises await, I suppose. We’re looking at Computex for some fireworks maybe?
Anyway, that’s your crash course in Project Kennan’s chaotic unveiling. Follow Tom’s Hardware for more brain food, if that’s your jam. They’re always in the mix with the latest scoop.
