Okay, here goes nothing. So, I just stumbled across this thing called the IREM Collection Volume 3 – imagine it, a mixed bag of shoot ’em ups all wrapped up and ready to launch next week on consoles. Both digitally and physically. Exciting, right? Eh, maybe. Depends if you’re into that sorta thing.
Anyway–no–wait, hear me out! We’re talking about three very different, yet kinda similar games. There’s Mr. Heli, Mystic Riders, and Dragon Breed. Fantasy meets arcade-world randomness. I mean, who would’ve thought to throw a broomstick and some mythical creatures into a shooter? But that’s another story.
So, Mr. Heli – or Battle Chopper if you’re fancy – is this eclectic helicopter with legs. Yeah, legs. It hit Japan’s arcades in ’87. It’s like you’re piloting through these funky stages that feel more like a maze with hidden paths and bosses that could give you nightmares. Mining crystals to get cash… and for what? Better gear, of course! Seems like an allegory for life, doesn’t it?
Then you’ve got Mystic Riders, which honestly sounds like someone threw darts at a board to decide the concept. “Let’s have them ride broomsticks!” Sure thing, and why not toss in some giant sky turtles and fiery demons while we’re at it. You can even team up with a friend – or force your sibling to play as Mark the wizard or Zeal the witch, depending on who loses rock-paper-scissors. You fly around trying not to get blasted, which feels a lot like my morning commute, minus the magic. Or plus? Who knows.
And let’s not forget Dragon Breed – because who hasn’t dreamed of riding a massive dragon named Bahamoot into battle? This one came out in ’89 and is like R-Type had a bizarre, scaly apocalypse party. It’s got wings, and I don’t mean Red Bull’s version.
But here’s the kicker! They’ve tossed in options like rapid-fire buttons, quick save/load, and even a rewind feature. Those who’ve grown up in the ’80s, like me, probably would’ve sold their soul for a rewind button back then. Not kidding. Also, leaderboards and co-op mode are there because flexing your high scores is a thing now.
Oh! And don’t forget the visuals – they’ve added display filters so it looks all retro, but maybe shinier. Oh, right, we’ll be reviewing this collection soon on PS4Blog.net, so keep an eye out. Or don’t. But it might be cool.
I mean, that’s all for now. Until next time – wait, what was I saying? Never mind. It’ll come back to me later.
