Being a Fallout fan—oh boy, it’s like riding a rollercoaster that just never ends, isn’t it? I mean, Fallout 76 got its act together (finally!) and the TV show? Yeah, that’s a hit too with Season 2 just around the corner. But where’s the new single-player RPG, huh? Fallout 4 is like ancient history at this point. And don’t even get me started on how we might not see Fallout 5 until we’re living in some futuristic world ourselves—Bethesda’s got their hands full with The Elder Scrolls 6 first, after all.
But hey, it’s not all doom and gloom (pun intended). The Fallout community, those fantastic folks, they’re always whipping up some killer mods to keep us fed. Just came across this jaw-dropping piece of work called Fallout: Bakersfield—props to whoever cooked that up. Saw the trailer over the weekend, and man, it might just be the coolest thing I’ve seen since sliced bread.
So, Fallout: Bakersfield. Sounds intriguing, right? It’s set in Bakersfield, California, which is basically Necropolis from the first game—a ghoul paradise. You know, radiation and all that jazz. Anyway—wait, I’m rambling—back to the game. You’re a Vault 13 dweller bumping into familiar faces like Harry, that super mutant guy. Are you the hero from Fallout 1 or maybe some scout named Talius? Your guess is as good as mine.
The gameplay is like this funky mix of classic Fallout RPG vibes and old-school DOOM action. They’ve made this unique UI that’s like a beautiful mashup of both games, and really, it just works. Seriously, check out the trailer because words don’t do it justice.
It’s got those pixel-art graphics, you know, that retro-futuristic deal only more… gory? And the “2.5D” look? It’s totally giving off DOOM vibes, which for some reason feels just right here. You’ll be gunning down ghouls with goodies like the 10mm SMG and Plasma Pistol—oh, and you can blow up some props, riffle through things, and even chat a bit instead of just shooting everything. The charm of exaggerated animations and crunchy sound effects from the first Fallout really hit me in the nostalgia bone.
The folks behind this, Alexander “Red888Guns” and Denis Berezin, seem like they’ve got their hearts all in. They’re about 60% done with the project—feels like they’ve thought of everything. And they’re not even in it for the money. How cool is that? You can support them if you want, maybe chip in a couple of bucks on their Boosty page. No pressure though, but hey, I threw a few bucks their way. Feels like these creative mods are more adventurous than what the big studios do.
Anyway—takes a deep breath—there you have it. Fallout: Bakersfield. It’s a trip you’re gonna want to take, trust me.
