Soul Paint offers a unique VR journey that blends 3D drawing with self-reflection. Unveiled at SXSW 2024, this project, crafted by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit and narrated by Rosario Dawson, invites participants to delve into their emotions using immersive tech. As you navigate an ethereal realm, you become a 3D figure equipped to sketch across this vast space onto your own virtual form.
Incorporating body-mapping with virtual reality, Soul Paint aims to deepen our emotional awareness. The creators envision it as a tool for building empathy and social bonds by sharing personal experiences, allowing you to convey these emotions to others after your journey.
I had a chance to try it firsthand at the NewImages Festival in 2025, during a quick 20-minute session in the XR Market. The experience kicks off with a thought-provoking question: “Where are you feeling?” Initially unsure, I soon found the experience gaining a spiritual dimension. In this almost otherworldly setting, you’re encouraged to express yourself freely and physically.
The outcome is soothing and introspective, offering a sense of self-discovery. While my drawings were far from masterpieces—I’m definitely not an artist—I accomplished what I needed in that moment. You’re able to sketch onto your virtual body and, at the end, leave a voice note that you can choose to save for others. It’s a beautiful way to express emotions when words fail.
Soul Paint serves as a reflective VR mirror, and although it’s a finite experience with limited interactive depth, it excels through its thoughtful design and meditative qualities. It’s a refreshing way to communicate that I hope inspires similar projects in the future.
Currently, there’s no word on a home release for Soul Paint, but stay tuned for updates as we receive more information.
