Zoom’s taking a leap, folks. Or maybe not a leap—I’m not sure what to call it, really. But Meta just threw a fresh Zoom app into the Horizon Store mix, and now your Quest avatar can crash online meetings. Yep.
Rewind to 2021, when Zoom first sidled up to Horizon Workrooms. That was more like a VR meeting space where you could awkwardly blend VR avatars with people on regular webcams. Anyway, fast forward, and now there’s this standalone Zoom app that doesn’t need all the Workrooms fluff. Just Zoom, plain and… well, simple?
The app’s free, which is cool. Meta’s been bragging it’s like a smooth extension of the Zoom Workplace app you already know from your phone or computer. Which sounds nice in theory.
So here’s the scoop: you can hop into calls as your avatar—think cartoonish version of yourself, waving invisibly like a kid who just discovered a finger puppet. It’s not that whole immersive thing like Workrooms, though. More like a 2D version projected for whoever’s watching, whether they’re VR-ing it or on a regular ol’ webcam.
But let’s talk avatars. These Meta creations have come a long way, sure, but they’re still hanging out in the “Saturday morning cartoon” realm. Not quite matching Apple’s flashy Persona avatars on Vision OS 26 yet. Oh, and Vision Pro users have had this fancy Persona Zoom app thing since February 2024, flexing on us with their futuristic vibes.
But hey, can’t beat free, right? If you’re curious or just bored, grab the Zoom Workplace app on the Horizon Store, log in, and throw your avatar into the meeting chaos. Or maybe you’ll just spend hours fussing with avatar hair. Who knows.
