Oh man, Google might just be cooking up something new. You know, their I/O event is next week, and—get this—they might drop some smart glasses. I’m just guessing, but maybe they’re trying to mess with Ray-Ban’s groove. Who knows?
Anyway, there was this promo thingy for Google I/O, right? And there’s Sameer Samat, the Android Ecosystem guy, strutting around with these glasses. Didn’t spill too much about them, but he did mention that folks at the event might see “cool Android demos.” Cryptic much? But also kinda intriguing.
Now, I played detective (okay, I just cropped a screenshot—so high-tech, right?), and those glasses really give off a Ray-Ban vibe. They’ve got just one camera on the left. Not much, but something about it seems… classic?
Oh, and there’s a little LED above the camera. A little flashy light to let people know when you’re snapping pics or shooting video, probably taking a page from Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. Makes sense, though.
And then, you look at the arms—chunky beasts! My hunch? They’re full of batteries and processors. Could be powered by a new Android XR system, given what Samat hinted at. And—whoops—on the left side, there’s this teeny slit near the ear. Maybe it’s for sound? Or not. Maybe it’s just a button. Wild guess.
Meanwhile, in another universe—cough, Apple land—they’re apparently brewing their own smart specs. Bloomberg says they’re making a special chip, which is all kinds of nerdy.
But seriously, May 20th and 21st can’t come soon enough. Google I/O’s lining up with livestreams, keynotes, and probably more than one geeky rabbit hole to dive into. There’re even specific Android XR talks on the agenda. Could be worth a watch, if that’s your jam.
I’m definitely tuning in. Heck, you can catch it live on YouTube on May 20th at 10 AM PT. Good stuff.
Check it out below, or don’t. Whatever floats your boat.
