Showtime is back in action, rekindling the Dexter flame with a fresh prequel series titled “Original Sin,” and they’ve just unveiled the very first trailer.
Although Dexter concluded its original run over a decade ago, the current trend of reviving beloved series has once again brought this iconic show into the spotlight. After the 2022 sequel, “Dexter: New Blood,” which took us ten years past the original events, Paramount and Showtime are now treating us to a prequel series. So, dive into the first trailer for “Dexter Original Sin.” But before you do, be wary of possible spoilers concerning the end of New Blood, as the prequel intriguingly ties back to it. You’ve had your fair warning!
In the trailer, scenes from the climax of New Blood reveal Dexter lying in a snowy landscape, surrounded by his own blood after his son, Harrison, shoots him. While he’s receiving medical attention, a series of flashbacks unravel, paving the way for the prequel. The plot, as described, is set in 1991 Miami and follows Dexter, now played by Patrick Gibson, as he morphs from student to vengeful serial killer. When his chilling desires can no longer be subdued, he is forced to navigate his inner darkness.
To manage his macabre impulses, Dexter finds guidance in his father, Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater. Together, they devise a Code that aids Dexter in targeting and eliminating deserving individuals without alerting law enforcement. This becomes particularly tricky as young Dexter embarks on a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.
Fans will be delighted to find Michael C. Hall reprising his role as Dexter through narration. Plus, there’s an exciting cameo from Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy fame. While it’s safe to assume Dexter remains unscathed given the prequel setting, it promises to be an entertaining journey nonetheless.
Moreover, this prequel might just shed light on Dexter’s fate at the end of New Blood, as there’s another sequel series titled “Resurrection” on the horizon. Chances are, the prequel could conclude with Dexter waking up, alive and well. Mark your calendars for December 13 when the series premieres on Paramount+ to find out!
